HOW TO DO WATER PHOTOGRAPHY?
Water can be photographed in a few ways instead of a single way. Each of the methods of water photography has its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. Therefore, understanding the concept of each one is very crucial in order to ensure better end results.
Probably one of the most common ways of photographing a water body is capturing its image in a standing i.e at rest position. The idea behind it is simple. You are just depicting water without any motions in the picture. What’s interesting about this method of water photography is that you are able to capture the natural water movements when it is at rest such as its waves, water droplets, high speeds etc. In order to accomplish this task having a camera with a minimum shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second is necessary. That’s what you need on the lower end. The better you can get the better it will be for photographing such pictures.
WATER IN MOTION
This method of water photography is opposite of the above-stated method. In this one, you will be focusing on capturing the motion of the water instead of capturing it at its rest position. This helps in bring emotion and feelings in the image that are depicted by the water as well as your object (if it’s different). Opposite to the standing water method, you will be needing a camera with a slow shutter speed to capture such moments. Anything below or equal to the shutter speed of 1/5th of a second will suffice.
CAPTURING THE WATER COLOR
Technically water is colorless. Yes, you read that right. Water has no color! Actually, when water is observed in small quantities then it appears to be colorless and when its density increases slowly it starts exhibiting a blue color which is caused due to the scattering of white light. This is the reason why water bodies such as oceans, seas, and rivers appear to be blue in color. Now, many photographers are fond of capturing this blue color of water and sometimes the different unique colors of water that appears at certain times only. Capturing such colors is possible by setting up a good focus and by maintaining optimum light levels either naturally or externally or with the help of filters.
Another popular way of water photography is referred to as sun illumination. This technique is used to capture those stunning pictures of sunrises and sunsets. If done perfectly then such pictures have no match! But capturing such images is quite a challenge in itself. One of the biggest challenges is the challenge of light which is very hard to fix. In general, it is recommended to maintain a balance of light in such a way that sun illumination is at the optimum brightness. Setting exposure levels play a big role in this. Therefore, it is recommended to use where maximum customizations can be made with respect to lighting levels.
