There is a down side to this type of lifestyle, however. A sedentary lifestyle creates more problems than convenience can fix. Before you set your life goals to maximize convenience, take a look at what you will pay if you live that way.

1. Bad Physical Health

A lifestyle that is too convenient will soon affect your physical and mental health. Mental health is harder to see, but it actually comes more quickly. Your physical body will try to hold out.

The body will give signs at first and eventually break down into more serious conditions.

Obesity is impacting 1/3rd of all American adults today. It is a serious outcome and an obvious effect of lazy living, but there are others. Conditions as varied as acne all the way to heart conditions come from being sedentary.

Your body may develop arthritis, lower back pain, brittle bones, atrophied muscles and many other conditions based on how long you remain sedentary.

2. Bad Mental Health

A lack of exercise or movement also affects the mind. The mind-body connection has been proven through many studies. The less healthy the body becomes, the less healthy the mind becomes.

A sedentary lifestyle is a lifestyle with no challenges. The brain is a muscle. If any muscle in the body is not used, then it will atrophy.

The brain is no different. When it is out of shape, you will not be able to focus as well. Your IQ may actually drop.

You will not be able to problem solve as quickly. You may even recede into certain mental conditions such as brain fog which can lead to physiological conditions like confusion, nausea, dizziness and other things.

3. Bad Emotional Health

A sedentary lifestyle will grate on your emotions as well. First of all, you will lose friends. No one likes to be around someone who is lazy. Losing friends means losing perspectives.

No man is an island, and if you do not have friends to share your thoughts with, your thoughts will turn inward and become poison.

The worst punishment in prison is solitary confinement. Imagine – prisoners are neighbors with killers, rapists, and robbers.

Even though they are surrounded with the worst people society has to offer, the worst punishment is isolation from these people.

Keep this in mind when you are shutting off your friends trying to maximize the convenience in your life.

4. Less Opportunity

People who do not get out into society are sure to receive fewer opportunities in all areas of life. Sedentary people achieve less in their professional and dating lives, which can lead to depression.

It certainly leads to stagnation. If you can stand dating less attractive people and taking orders from bosses when you are old, then by all means – stay sedentary.

People also love to see effort before they trust a person with more opportunity. If you are living a sedentary lifestyle, no one is going to be impressed with you.

You may not even hear about opportunities that are going on, much less be offered those opportunities.

5. A Lower Quality Lifestyle

As most people get older, they become less satisfied with lower quality things. However, hard work is usually required to get things of higher quality.

Common ailments like backache, IBS and stress become chronic, leading to no or half-baked motives in life.

If a person is already used to being lazy, it is difficult to change personal habits to achieve a higher quality lifestyle.

6. You Will Always Be in a Bad Mood

If you sit down for a long time at work, you will probably notice that your mood takes a real dive. This is exactly what Australian researchers found. People who sat down for more than six hours a day felt some sort of psychological distress.

They felt tired physically, nervous, hopeless or restless.

The bad mood is worsened by the fact that people who claim to be relaxing are not really even relaxing.

The sedentary activities that most people take part in actually increase anxiety. For instance, playing video games for an extended period of time can increase your risk of anxiety.

On the contrary, exercise has the exact opposite effect. You may think of exercise as a difficult thing to do, but your body disagrees.

You get endorphins from exercise, which is the hormone that makes your body feel good. Regular cardio is just as good of a mood booster as prescription level antidepressants. It is easily among the best fat burners around.

7. You Risk Cancer

It is worth noting that a sedentary lifestyle increases your risk of all kinds of cancer. It gets worse the longer that you remain lazy.

The highest instances of cancer for sedentary people include lung cancer, colon cancer, and endometrial cancer.

Sedentary lifestyles usually correspond with sedentary foods, which do not help your chances with cancer.

It’s time for complete diet makeover. If you are eating chips and candy and drinking soft drinks while you are watching TV or playing video games, then you are exponentially increasing your chances of cancer.

8. You Become More Forgetful

You do not have to lose your memory when you are old – there are things that you can do. However, a sedentary lifestyle will find you facing this problem earlier than you think.

If you do not move around, your brain will begin to work less effectively, and the first thing that you will probably notice is that you cannot remember things as well.

There are some genetic characteristics that expose certain people to Alzheimer’s and dementia at a higher rate.

However, even these people can stave off the condition with regular physical and mental exercise. It must be consistent, however.

It does not even have to be intense – walking three times a week for 30 minutes a day and taking on a crossword puzzle is enough to maintain good brain health.

9. Your Blood Sugar Goes Up

You can remain sedentary and keep what most people would call a “healthy weight” for quite a long time, especially if you are young or just have a fast metabolism.

However, you do not have to be obese in order to expose yourself to diabetes and heart attack. Why? Your blood sugar spikes when you are sedentary, and this is not directly correlated to your weight.

Even if you do not experience any weight gains, your body fat percentage will probably go up. If you have a body fat percentage above 25 percent, then you need to do something about it immediately.

If you leave this situation to its own devices, then you subject yourself to body issues like high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Final Words –

The World Health Organization found that 1 in 4 people around the world are living a sedentary lifestyle. Most of them are experiencing a large amount of the symptoms mentioned above, and possibly others.

Do not give your life over to laziness. The short-term pleasure that you may feel does not overcome the long-term problems that you cause.

Adopt healthy habits. Get up, get exercising, work your brain, keep learning and join with people. This is the only way to live, even if it is difficult at times!
